SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Xiphias gladius

SPECIES NAME(s)

Swordfish

Results from both genetic (Muths et al. 2009) and otoliths (Mahé et al. 2016) studies suggest that swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwest Indian Ocean globally function as a unique panmictic population. Currently, a single assessment unit is considered for this species in the Indian Ocean by the IOTC (IOTC 2023) and is here used for this profile. However, considering the updated information regarding swordfish stock structure and the differential CPUE and biomass trends between regions, the Working Group on Billfiishes has considered the feasibility of performing a multi-stock assessment (IOTC 2021).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • The IOTC has adopted interim target and limit reference points, along with a decision framework, for managing swordfish in the Indian Ocean (Res 15/10).
