The stock structure of blue swimming crab in Indian waters is not known (Fernández and Ganapathiraju 2019). Under the framework of a fishery improvement project for the gillnet fishery in Palk Bay in Tamil Nadu (the region that concentrates most of the catches in India), the resource has been assessed in that area and some management measures were advised (Josileen et al. 2019). Such assessment is now outdated and it remains to be confirmed if more assessments will be conducted in the future. Similar information does not exist for other areas where the blue swimming crab is harvested in India, so the profile is structured as a Resource.

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • CMFRI has recently drafted a Crab Management Plan for the Palk Bay fishery, which is an area of Tamil Nadu, the state with the largest landings of blue swimming crab in India (Josileen et al. 2019). Specific management regulations for the fishery, including harvest control rules, have been advised in that management plan, which could be also applied to the whole Indian fishery.
