SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Placopecten magellanicus

SPECIES NAME(s)

American sea scallop

American sea scallops are distributed from Newfoundland south to Cape Hatteras and are homogenous enough to be considered a single stock. In the US, sea scallops are assessed based on two main regions which are combined to characterize the core stock: the Mid-Atlantic Bight and Georges Bank (which includes southern New England) (NEFSC 2018). The small US Gulf of Maine component of the stock is assessed separately.
