SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)
Coregonus artedi
SPECIES NAME(s)
Lake cisco
Lake Cisco Coregonus artedi are captured in mixed gillnet fisheries in the lakes of Manitoba which primarily target walleye Sander vitreus and northern pike Esox lucius (Klein and Galbraith 2017; Knapman et al. 2022; Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development 2022; Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development 2022). There is ambiguity and debate regarding Coregonus spp. structure generally (Ackiss et al. 2020) and for C. artedi particularly (Turgeon and Bernatchez 2003). Some lakes in the province are interconnected, and there is potential for movement between systems (Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development 2022); but there are no available studies regarding the stock structure of lake cisco populations in Manitoba. Meanwhile, genetic analyses for lake cisco found in the Great Lakes have shown evidence of genetic diversity among and within lakes (Stott et al. 2022).
