SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)
Euthynnus lineatus
SPECIES NAME(s)
Black skipjack
Black Skipjack (Euthynnus lineatus) is an epipelagic, neritic and oceanic tuna species, distributed throughout tropical and subtropical waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. It is found from Southern California to northern Peruvian Coasts, around the offshore islands of the Eastern Pacific, and also occasionally as far west as the Hawaiian Islands (Schaefer, K.M. 1987). They spawn in the central and southern part of the Gulf of California during summer, when the surface temperature is between 28° and 32°C and larvae and early juveniles have been collected off the coasts of Mexico and Central America (Sánchez-Velasco et al. 1999).
Black skipjack tuna are commonly captured in association with other tunas by purse seine and longline fisheries being commonly discarded at sea. This tuna species present a marginal commercial value due to its small size and dark flesh. There is scarce data on stock structure and reproductive and biological features (Schaefer, K.M. 1987). This is a Resource profile since there is no information on biological stock or assessment units for this species.
