SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Opisthonema spp.

SPECIES NAME(s)

Thread herrings nei, (multispecies)

Thread herring represents a complex of three species (Opisthonema libertate, O. medirastre and O. bulleri) that are captured together in Panama. Thread herrings have been recently assessed in Panamanian waters so an Assessment Unit top node is assigned in this profile. Thread herrings have an Eastern Pacific distribution from Mexico to Peru, but no studies on the stock structure of this resource around Panama waters are available (Canales 2020), although a single unit in Panamanian waters is considered for assessment and management purposes.

The main species captured in the small pelagic fishery in Panama are Pacific anchoveta (50-60% of the landings) and thread herrings (35-40% of the landings), and other species with minor representation (Marin Trust 2022).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • A monthly monitoring system is in place at processing factories to collect information on landings, and hydroacoustic surveys in collaboration with the industrial sector are undertaken before the season begins (Núñez 2020).
