Yellowtail amberjack is a circumglobal species found in subtropical and temperate waters, in the Indo-Pacific, South Africa and the Eastern Atlantic. In the eastern Pacific, in the north it is found from California, United States to central Mexico Pacific, including the Gulf of California and in the south hermisphere, from south Peru to Chile (Eschmeyer et al. 1984)(Robertson and Gerald 2015). This species consists of a series of disjunct subpopulations, many of which until recently were considered to represent distinct species. Until recently, most of the literature in the eastern Pacific referred to this species are Seriola dorsalis, but genetic analyses confirmed it is a single species with three distinct populations: Northeast Pacific, Northwest Pacific and South Pacific (IUCN 2015)(Premachandra et al. 2017).
