Species was previously split into North (USA) and South (South America) stocks, but the Atlantic coastal stock is now considered a single stock from Gulf of Maine to mid-Argentina (Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission n.d.). Gulf of Mexico is a separate stock (Fishbase n.d.).
