Latest research shows that this species is genetically structured on a large geographical scale and for Greenland there is no evidence that is structured at a local scale. It has been suggested three genetically distinct populations of lumpfish in North Atlantic: Maine-Canada-Greenland, Iceland-Norway, and the Baltic sea area (Pampoulie et al. 2014).
