COMMON NAMES

Besides being found around the southern tip of South America, Southern Blue Whiting Micromesistius australis is found on the southern shelf of New Zealand, but this is considered to be a distinct sub-species – Micromesistius australis pallidus as opposed to Micromesistius australis australis.
In the southern tip of South America, this species (M. australis australis) can be found both in the Southeastern Pacific Ocean and in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Currently, the stock is considered to migrate between the Chilean waters (SE Pacific) and the Argentinian waters South of parallel 54ºS (SW Atlantic). Thus, the stock unit being assessed now by the Chilean Comité Científico de Recursos Demersales Zona Sur Austral (CCT-RDZSA) corresponds to that of national waters and Argentina south of parallel 54° LS (CCT-RDZSA 2022). The SW Atlantic stock is also covered in another profile.
