SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Melanogrammus aeglefinus

SPECIES NAME(s)

Haddock

Icelandic haddock is geographically segregated from other haddock stocks (ICES 2023). Within its range, the stock’s geographic distribution has been shifting northward (MFRI 2023). Genetic studies indicate a significant differentiation of the Icelandic haddock stock (Giӕver and Forthun, 1999; ICES, 2014c), but similarities to populations off the Norwegian coast at Lofoten South and Nordland (Berg et al. 2020). Information on the metapopulation structure of the Icelandic haddock stock is limited (ICES 2023).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • There is a strong management system for the target species and includes an annual assessment at the TAC setting. Since the 2013/2014 fishing season, the set TAC has followed the harvest control rule and scientific advice (ICES 2019).
