The Yellow Sea cod is enclosed by land and by warm subtropical waters (Zhang, 1984; Grant et al., 1987). Gong et al (1991) showed restricted gene flow between the Yellow Sea cod and cod in the Sea of Japan.
Song et al. (2016) identify three genetically distinct populations (Yellow Sea; Sea of Japan & Eastern Hokkaido; Okhotsk Sea) and suggest that there should be three management units.
