A distinct stock exists and is assessed in Indian waters (Kumar et al. 2012); a subpopulation in southern Philippines is suggested by (Santos et al. 2010). The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) considers the stock structure of kawakawa as unclear and that further research is needed. The IOTC conducts a data-limited assessment of kawakawa every three years (Fu 2020)(Geng 2022)(IOTC 2022).


ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • The status of kawakawa in the Indian Ocean is assessed every three years. The last assessment commissioned by the Working Party of Neritic Tuna (WPNT) was performed in 2020 and a new stock assessment is scheduled for 2023 (IOTC 2022). In 2022, a preliminary assessment, not scheduled by the WPNT, was conducted (Geng 2022).
