SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Octopus vulgaris

SPECIES NAME(s)

Common octopus

Octopus vulgaris has a worldwide distribution in temperate waters (FAO 1984), including the north-west and west coast of Africa (AquaMaps 2019). Recent molecular approaches have detected O. vulgaris in São Tomé and Príncipe Island, southern Gulf of Guinea, indicating higher connectivity and larval transport than previously thought (Lima et al. 2023). Therefore, the identification and stock structure of this species in Ghanian waters is unascertained.
