The Pacific and Gulf of California distribution of this species appear to constitute a single genetic stock (Munguía-Vega, 2011) and there are signs of a subpopulation in the North of Sonora (Munguía et al. in prep. In DOF, 2014). Sonora and Sinaloa, where three species are caught (Callinectes arcuatus, C. toxotes​ and C. bellicosus), are the most important states in terms of catches, followed by Baja California Sur, where only C. bellicosus is captured (Cisneros-Mata et al. 2015). Two management plans are developed to manage the fisheries, one for Sinaloa and Sonora (SAGARPA 2014) and a second one for the remaining Pacific coastal states, including Baja California Sur (Castañeda et al. 2015)(INP 2012). Therefore two assessment units are here considered: Eastern Gulf of California and West of Baja California Sur.
