SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Mycteroperca bonaci

SPECIES NAME(s)

Black grouper

The stock structure of Black Grouper in the U.S. Southeastern Region is not well known. Given the lack of new information on the genetics and stock structure, the Life history workgroup (LHW) recommends no changes to the fishery management region for this species (SEDAR 2017). Since this species appears to be a single population centered in south Florida and mainly in the Florida Keys, the assessment should treat the stock as a single unit rather than provide separate assessments for each of the two management units: the US South Atlantic and the US Gulf of Mexico (SEDAR 2017). This profile refers to the Northern Gulf of Mexico and NW Atlantic southern assessment.

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Management is based on results of peer-reviewed stock assessments relative to explicitly defined biological reference points.
  • A Management Plan for this fishery is established for snapper grouper species in the US South Atlantic coast.
