SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Euphausia superba

SPECIES NAME(s)

Antarctic krill

The Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a circumpolar species in the Southern Ocean. Krill concentrations seem to be densest in CCAMLR Area 48, where most of the fisheries for krill have focused their activities; only small catches have been taken from other areas. Area 48 is considered to be a single management unit (Hønneland et al., 2015a). The map shows the Area 48 limits. According to CCAMLR (2023), in the past 10 years, the spatial distribution of the fishery has become focused in the region of the Bransfield Strait off the Antarctic Peninsula (Subarea 48.1), to the northwest of Coronation Island (Subarea 48.2) and the north of South Georgia (Subarea 48.3).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • It is considered that the current biomass level is sufficient to ensure that the stock remains at or above a level that meets ecosystem needs at the Area 48 level.
