Analysis of both microsatellite and mtDNA datasets found distinct populations in SW Africa and Eastern Brazil (Antoni et al. 2015). More recently 4 genetically distinct groups were identified considering the population structure, phylogeography and migration patterns: North Atlantic, Mediterranean, SE Atlantic and SW Atlantic (Antoni 2017). The assessment unit contains the Southeast and South regions of Brazil (Cergole et al. 2005).
