SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Molva molva

SPECIES NAME(s)

Ling

COMMON NAMES

Langa

There is currently no evidence of genetically distinct populations within the ICES area. However, ling on widely separated fishing grounds may still be sufficiently isolated to be considered management units. A study on the population genetic structure of ling in the Northeast Atlantic rejected the hypothesis of a single ling stock in the Northeast Atlantic, and rather suggested the existence of two or more groups, with the main grouping represented by a western (Rockall and Iceland) and an eastern group (Faroe Bank, Norway) (Blanco Gonzalez et al. 2014).

A recent study analyzes the genetic structure of ling in the Northeast Atlantic but it does not include sampling from Iceland (McGill et al. 2023)

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Progress has been made in assessment unit identification using genetic analyses of Ling (Molva molva) in the Northeast Atlantic (Blanco Gonzalez et al. 2014). So far there is no evidence of a different stock structure (McGill et al. 2023)
