Metapenaeus monoceros is recorded at the eastern Mediterranean, east coast of Africa, Madagascar, the Red Sea, all coasts of India, Pakistan and Ceylon, and Malaysia. Also present in Indonesia, Australia and Japan, (Mistakidis 1970). The penaeid prawn fishery in the country is a multispecies one supported by more than a dozen species of which Metapenaeus monoceros is an important component. There has been only a few studies on the dynamics of the exploited stocks of this species (Nandakumar and Srinath 1999). Stock structure of Speckled shrimp is unknown.
