The Greenland halibut shows a weak but significant genetic structure across the North Atlantic, and Western and Eastern populations are proposed in that area (Westgaard et al. 2017). Moreover, other studies found this differentiation to be much more robust, suggesting further segregation in several spawning areas in the Davis Strait (Gíslason et al. 2023). Migration among studied areas along the North Atlantic has shown that results could vary as much as to generate a panmixia hypothesis (Roy et al. 2014), and lately, to sub-stock structures through migratory behaviors and fidelity to certain coastal areas (Vihtakari et al. 2022). Under this complex scenario, NAFO considered three inshore stocks in subarea 1A that spawn in the Davis Strait, including Disko Bay (NAFO 2022). The stock is believed to be dependent on recruitment from offshore areas but still isolated from stocks in Baffin Bay and the Davis Strait (NAFO 2022).
