Distributed from Massachusetts (USA) to Brazil, including the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, the stock structure of the black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci) is still unclear. Spawning areas are known in the Caribbean but not yet in the Campeche Bank (Eklund et al. 2000). Some studies seem to indicate the presence of different subpopulations along the Northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula both based on parasitic communities of the species (Espínola-Novelo et al. 2013) and more recently in genotypic assessment of stock discrimination (González-Salas et al. 2020). The artisanal fleet uses mechanized lines and handlines, while the industrial fleet uses bottom longlines. This profile refers to the Southern Gulf of Mexico Assessment Unit.
