The FIP has implemented 22 temporary closures from August 2023- August 2024 across 18 communities; the average closure period was a duration of 14.48 weeks.

The FIP is participating in a coral reef monitoring initiative in Sulawesi, employing the manta tow method to assess reef health and inform the placement of temporary closures for sustainable octopus fisheries. Results highlight varying coral conditions across communities, with recommendations for relocation or expansion of closures based on ecological and fisheries data.

Community based surveillance (POKMASWAS) efforts have been ongoing including establishing and training POKMASWAS groups in several villages, focusing on coordination, field practices, and administration to enhance community roles in surveillance and ensure compliance with fisheries regulations.

Communities in Sulawesi have implemented fisheries management measures such as temporary closures, gear limitations, and size restrictions, supported by surveillance activities involving local stakeholders, including fishers, government officials, and community leaders. Challenges like resource shortages, limited participation, and enforcement issues are being addressed through awareness campaigns, expanded teams, logistical support, and collaborative discussions to improve compliance and effectiveness.

The FIP collected site-level data from January 2022- August 2024, recording 243,716 kg of octopus with an average CPUE of 4 kg/trip; landings peaked in March 2022 and 2023 and February 2024, the overall trend shows a decline in total octopus landings over the years.

A review of the octopus fishery management plan was conducted. 

The FIP held a stakeholder meeting in Makassar to discuss the economic and ecological importance of South Sulawesi's marine and fisheries sector. The FIP is participating in ongoing initiatives such as coral reef and mangrove rehabilitation and community empowerment. 

Field data validation efforts have been ongoing for octopus fisheries at Karangantu Port, Banten, focusing on supporting the development of Indonesia's Octopus Fishery Management Plan; findings emphasize the need for improved species identification, enhanced monitoring systems, and sustainable management practices to maximize the potential of octopus as a bycatch commodity.

Between August 2023-August 2024, 22 temporary closures were implemented across 18 communities. 

Ministerial decree No. 34/2024 issued which establishes a formal consultation platform that acts as a task force for FMP development based on FMAs and/or fisheries resources in Indonesian marine waters.
