The species is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from East Africa to the Hawaiian islands (Palomares and Pauly 2022). The stock structure is unknown (Hiromatka and Morgan 2021) in Indonesia, where the species is found in different regions such as East Nusa Tengara and Sulawesi.
An assessment has been conducted in Sulawesi, where the species in managed in four different management areas (WPP 713, 714, 715 and 716). Handlines and spear guns/harpoons are used for targeting the species (MSC 2020).
