SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Thunnus alalunga

SPECIES NAME(s)

Albacore

Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) is a circumglobal, highly migratory species found throughout tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions of the world’s oceans close to the mid-oceanic gyres (Labonne et al. 2022). Unlike the Atlantic and the Pacific, in the Indian Ocean, there is probably only one southern stock, distributed from 5ºN to 40ºS, because there is no northern gyre (IOTC 2017). It appears that juvenile albacore shows a continuous geographical distribution in the Atlantic and Indian oceans on the north edge of the subtropical convergence (Nikolic et al. 2014)(Labonne et al. 2022). For stock assessment purposes, one pan-ocean stock has been assumed for the Indian Ocean (IOTC 2017) (IOTC 2022).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Albacore tuna stock in the Indian Ocean is currently considered healthy, not overfished nor undergoing overfishing (IOTC 2017)(IOTC 2022).
