SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Sebastes fasciatus

SPECIES NAME(s)

Acadian redfish, Ocean perch, redfish

COMMON NAMES

Unit 1+2

Historically, Acadian redfish in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Unit 1) and the Laurentian Channel (Unit 2) were assessed separately but from 2010 a single assessment was conducted following evidence that fish from these two units belong to the same biological stock. However, uncertainty remains over mixing with adjacent units (Valentin et al. 2005). Detailed genetic studies have shown a complex sub-stock structure for this species, with components often referred to as ecotypes (Benestan et al. 2021)(Valentin et al. 2014). Units 1 and 2 are two of nine NW Atlantic redfish management areas and Unit 1 and Unit 2 Acadian redfish remain assessed and managed as a single stock.

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Stock status is derived from the most recent survey of a long-time series of randomized bottom trawl surveys in Units 1 and 2.
