The species is found in the Indo-West Pacific region (Froese and Pauly 2022). A recent study encountered signs of two geographically isolated lineages in Australia and Asia. Further studies are still needed to deeply understand the stock structure of this important economic species (Halasan et al. 2021). A management unit within the Gulf of Thailand (Thai waters) is considered.
