This species is distributed in the Eastern Pacific from southern California to Peru, rarely in the north of Baja California, Mexico; also at the Cocos and Galapagos islands. Found in inshore reef areas over hard bottoms until at least 60 m depth (Fishbase n.d.). The stock structure is unknown.

In Mexico, the species is targeted by the Huachinango and pacific snappers fishery.
