The mahi-mahi tagging project in the EPO is ongoing and continues to track horizontal movement patterns using conventional tags, with active participation from artisanal fishermen and vessel crews. The FIP has produced a report on recapture cases showing travel distances of 115 to 1,417 nautical miles over 4 to 141 days.

The FIP participated in a stock assessment workshop where IPIAP and IMARPE implemented a stock assessment model for mahi-mahi, incorporating environmental, habitat-specific, and ecosystem parameters. 

The FIP participated in the 102nd meeting of the IATTC; Resolution C-24-05 was adopted which promotes measures to strengthen regional research on shark species.

The FIP has produced a report on ETP interactions between the 2023-2024 season; 39.82% of monitored fishing trips involved commercially sold shark bycatch, while 6.59% involved incidental catch, primarily sharks and sea turtles, with most released alive.

A brief summary report on the handling and best practices for ETP species at sea has been made available

A preliminary analysis of recorded shark interactions was conducted using data from the 2022- 2023 mahi season. Data continues to be collected via the FIP monitoring system. 

The 9th binational Peru-Ecuador workshop was held between IPIAP and IMARPE to discuss and generate timely and standardized scientific information. 

IPIAP and ASOAMAN have continued their collaboration through activities such as donating samples for the second phase of the genetic study, recovering tags placed on mahi-mahi, transferring data for analysis, participating in training, and co-organizing FIP events.

ASOMAN signed a collaboration agreement with the Manta Skippers and Pilots Association aimed at promoting the adoption and implementation of the fishery logbook.

The FIP is promoting its mark-recapture project aimed at improving information on the mahi-mahi migration patterns on social media. 

ASOAMAN and IPIAP signed a second cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening their inter-institutional collaboration for the large pelagic fishery including mahi mahi.

The FIP attended a workshop organized by the Subsecretary of Fishing Resources in Ecuador which focused on enhancing understanding and identifying improvements for fisheries management tools, including specific objectives, harvest strategies and corresponding control rules. 

A binational workshop was held on mahi-mahi fisheries biology research in Peru and Ecuador. One of the agreements that came out of the workshop was to develop a stock assessment update using data from 2022 and to prepare a binational scientific publication.

The FIP has developed and released a bycatch identification guide 

The FIP participated in a migratory pilot project to tag mahi mahi in the EPO; two mahi were successfully tagged with satellite tags and 100 mahi were tagged with conventional tags

The FIP piloted a logbook for data collection; the logbook system registers practices for the handling and release of ETP species via photos and videos

The FIP has been working with IPIAP on a genomic study to improve the knowledge of the structure of mahi populations in the EPO; forty samples of mahi tissue were contributed to IPIAP by the FIP

The FIP signed an agreement with IPIAP in an effort to coordinate data collection actions 

The FIP has published a stock assessment of the dolphinfish in the South East Pacific Ocean.

Increase to PI 2.2.2; A comprehensive fishery logbook is in place which includes the ability to report the handling and releasing practices for bycatch species.

The Ecuadorian government has adopted the Ministerial Agreement MPCEIP-SRP-2023-0182-A which establishes a governance system for the mahi mahi fishery in Ecuador. The system includes a participatory mechanism through dialogue tables between the private and public sectors.
