A total of 33 trips have been conducted over 230 days; no seabird fatalities were recorded since the last update was released and whales and seals have experienced no recorded entanglements despite being observed near fishing areas. 

The first annual compliance report for the Tuna pole & line/ rod & reel fishery has been issued, covering inspections from January 2022 to June 2023. 

WWF has advertised a RFP to develop a management strategy for ETP species encountered within the fishery. This will serve as an alternative to the National Plan of Action for seabirds. 

The FIP has conducted 26 observer trips this year; 21 seabird interactions were observed and one fatality was reported. No marine turtles or mammals were observed. Sardine, anchovy and artificial squid bait continue to be used as bait onboard vessels. 

Observer trips are ongoing- 12 trips have been completed to date; no gear interactions with sea turtles or marine mammals have been observed.

Several trips were conducted in early 2022 and trip reports have been made available; the report mentions that the bait used attracted seabirds, but no unwanted ETP interactions/ catch were reported otherwise.

Meeting held with DFFE in September 2021; DFFE is taking steps to improve shore-based monitoring

The first annual fishery compliance report has been published, covering inspections from January 2022- June 2023. The report details that 95 inspections were conducted in 2022 and 18 more were conducted through July 2023 and none were found to have committed transgressions. 

Increase to PI 2.1.3, 2.2.3 & 2.3.3; five observer trips were conducted in 2021 providing new information on primary, secondary and ETP species interactions. 

The Southern Africa Sustainable Tuna Association (SASTUNA) albacore pole-line fishery certified as of December 14th, 2024.
