The FIP continues collect and record data through the monitoring program.

The FIP has developed a proposal to strengthen monitoring efforts via formalizing fishery refuge zones, facilitating stakeholder collaboration, monitoring fisheries, and promoting sustainable practices to enhance environmental, social, and economic outcomes.

The FIP held a meeting to discuss FIP progress, Pro Empleo training sessions and video proposal funding. 

Data continues to be collected for the bycatch monitoring program; data from the 2023 season has been made available.

The FIP continues to contribute to the removal of ghost gear and has developed a workplan for the implementation of the Ghost Gear Initiative at a local level.

The FIP held a workshop at the beginning of 2024 to present characteristics, challenges and monitoring methodologies of the fishing refuge zones (ZRP) to foster coordinated work among institutions, specialists, and authorities involved in five pilot projects​.

The FIP has published a stock assessment for the crab fishery in Sonora. 

The FIP has initiated the revision of the monitoring protocol to facilitate the formalization of the proposed network of fishing refuge areas.

The FIP has resumed the fishery monitoring program for the latest crab season and has expanded to encompass 42 additional vessels.

The FIP has initiated collaboration with the French Development Agency, which is backing the strategy for implementing the global initiative against ghost fishing nets in the northern Gulf of California.

With several new vessels added to the fishery monitoring program, the FIP has carried out a new training session on data collection

A draft paper has been produced on comparative bait experiments; the results of the paper showed no significant difference in catch performance between chano and mackerel baits, which were the most effective for the target species.  

The community-based Fishery Monitoring Program continued throughout the 2022 season; 158,959 kg was registered from July to December 2022.

The FIP is working on producing an updated pre-assessment in order to revise the FIP workplan; this work is ongoing.

The FIP held a meeting with stakeholders and state authorities at the end of 2022; the group discussed the sharing of monitoring information and fishery operation delays due to economic reasons. 

Statistical analyses of the selectivity experiment results have been carried out; the traps that demonstrate the highest efficiency are the Chesapeake double-deck traps and the double ring traps. The paper based on these analyses is still in draft form.

The FIP continues to collect and record data on catch and biometrics and shares this information with partners like INAPESCA. A formalized collaboration between INAPESCA and the FIP is underway. 

The research protocol for the efficiency of Chesapeake traps with degradable and stainless clips has been updated. Ongoing monitoring of the efficiency of catch, bycatch and trap clip quality under the updated protocol is underway.

Business plan developed for the waste management program to strategically reduce waste accumulation and help gain access to preferential markets. 

An experimental assessment of traps constructed with degradable clips was carried out between July-November 2022. Factors examined in the assessment included: constructions costs, catch efficiency, bycatch rates and operative easiness. The experiment demonstrated that the use of galvanized clips are recommended in the construction of traps to avoid ghost fishing in cases of lost traps.

The FIP participated in a pilot project in which samples of processed crab residue were dried, ground and analyzed; the product was observed to be a potential use for feed and/or fertilzer

The second stage of implementation of the SMART FISH Value Rescue Model has been completed; 33 structured interviews between cooperative partners, employees, and border directors of the fishing entity took place

Selectivity experiments are ongoing in the fishing areas of La Pinta and Bahía San Jorge; photos of the recent exercise are available. 

Analysis drafted on the reuse of crab processing waste and by-products

CEDO received accreditation as a Competency Certification and Evaluation Entity (ECE) in the National Council for Standardization and Certification of Labor Competencies (CONOCER). This accreditation allows the FIP to train, evaluate and certify the skills of people based on the standards of competence registered in the National Registry of Competencies. 

Bycatch logbook data from the swimming crab fishery bycatch monitoring program for the 2021 season made available

Selectivity experiments for four types of bait and three types of traps conducted. The bait species, Gulf croaker, and the double ring trap demonstrated the best average performance; draft scientific paper produced

Ongoing study to evaluate the degradation rate of degradable staples vs conventional staples. 

CEDO has invited various stakeholders including INAPESCA, CONAPESCA, the State Government of Sonora, the Aquaculture Institute of State of Sonora IAES, Pronatura Noroeste A.C., and Smart Fish Rescate de Valor de la Pesca Responsable A.C. to formally join the FIP.
