The FIP collected observer and port sampling data from April-September 2024 within the WCPFC & IOTC areas; no ETP interactions reported.

The FIP participated in a workshop organized by DGCF-MMAF to improve fisheries statistics in Indonesia, focusing on tuna HL and PL fisheries in the WCPO and IO areas. As a follow-up, DGCF-MMAF held a stakeholders meeting to gather data on fishery items and enumerators for all fisheries, including tuna.

The FIP virtually participated in the 6th IOTC Working Group on FADs focused on reviewing and improving FAD management measures. Key outcomes included assessing existing measures, identifying research gaps, and recommending actions to strengthen enforcement and enhance regional cooperation.

The 2024 Joint Fisheries Management Committee (KPBP) meeting was held in East Nusa Tenggara; discussions addressed stock declines, data quality for policymaking, legal compliance, and capacity-building initiatives, alongside recommendations for improving collaborative efforts and operational efficiency.

The FIP participated in a fishing logbook meeting along with stakeholders to discuss the creation of technical guidance documents for the fishing logbook.

Port sampling data has been made available from October 2023- March 2024; no ETP species interactions were recorded. 

The FIP continues installing EM systems onboard vessels; 2 additional tracking systems have been installed on 3 vessels between September 2023- February 2024. 

The FIP conducted an internal meeting with MSC Indonesia to further collaboration in support of preparatory meetings and to enhance data collection for the IOTC.

MDPI and AP2HI have assisted in getting 25 vessels registered in an effort to improve the quality of available data. 

The FIP conducted 111 port sampling activities, 2 surveillance camera audits and 3 onboard observer deployments between April- September 2023; no ETP interactions were recorded during this time. 

FIP participants actively supported and engaged in FCMC meetings in West and East Nusa Tenggara, addressing various fisheries management topics, including data collection, capacity building for fishermen, FAD management, quota-based fisheries, industry compliance, and the significance of sharing data with local authorities

Fifty-six fishers attended a training workshop in Sabang focused on increasing compliance and traceability for small-scale handline tuna fisheries. The workshop included training on monitoring and mitigating the risk of ETP interactions. 

FIP participants attended a meeting with MMAF, focused on enhancing observer onboard programs in the same regions, aiming to increase the number of observers and expand their placement for better quota-based fisheries policy support.

The FIP participated in a meeting hosted by the MMAF  discussing fishing logbook evaluation and enhancement in the western and central Pacific and Indian Ocean, with plans to integrate it with E-PIT.

The FIP conducted a training workshop on best handling practices for bycatch and ETP species; 108 vessel captains signed the Code of Conduct during this time. 

The new regulation 11/2023 Penangkapan Ikan Terukur has been issued by the Indonesian government to establish a quota-based fishery system;  the regulation will divide the country's waters into zones encompassing different Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs).

The FIP continues to install cameras and analyze electronic monitoring data; 152 trips were recorded on 33 vessels between October 2022- March 2023. 

The FIP participated in several meetings in early 2023; these forums included discussions on fisheries management issues, data collection, fisher and industry compliance and the importance of providing data to the local government. 

The FIP along with several conservation organizations, civil society groups, fisher associations and businesses offered their support for a letter that addresses the EU's lack of accountability with the use of drifting FADs; the letter highlighted the EU's obligation to apply the precautionary approach.

The FIP conducted 7 surveillance trips, 1 onboard observer trip and 68 port sampling trips between April- August 2022; no ETP interactions were recorded.

MMAF organized a workshop with the IOTC Secretariat and FAO to discuss the methodology that would be used to re-estimate the data from Indonesia in the IOTC.

AP2HI organized a fishers training workshop on the “Increasing Compliance and Traceability Aspects for Small Scale Handline Tuna Fisheries"; ETP mitigation techniques were discussed

FIP continues to participate in ongoing IOTC meetings 

The FIP printed and circulated the updated ETP/ ERS identification book to fishers and enumerators; the book guides fishers on how to best capture ETP species via photo and how to use the ID book

MDPI conducted a meeting to disseminate the Regional Regulation No.8 of 2020.

Observer training was held between September 12-17 in Tegal; 20 new observers were trained.

Data validation workshop held to discuss data verification, with, Fisheries Research Centre, MMAF and MDPI field staff.

Ministerial Regulation No.18 2021 related to Auxiliary Gear Deployment enacted; FAD regulations have been revised replacing previous Ministerial Regulation No. 26 year 2014 on Fish Aggregating Device.

AP2HI have conducted ETP identification and mitigation trainings with MMAF and supply chain partners in Maumere and Larantuka. MDPI have also conducted 'movie nights' to share information about ETPs and their importance to marine ecosystems in Lombok.

Co-management guidelines for the provinces of NTT and NTB, signed by the head of the provincial fisheries departments.

Onboard observer protocols have been developed for multi-day HL vessels to assess the fishery impacts on by-catch including bait, and whether or not there were ETP interactions.

The bait issues were also discussed during the co-management meetings and a draft bait identification booklet was developed for handline fisheries.

 The Diva system was also presented and discussed during the co-management meeting in NTT in August with stakeholders.

IPNLF participated and engaged with state members at the recent 23rd Annual Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission in Hyderabad, India.

Training of sustainable pole and line fisheries practices in Maumere and Larantuka

MDPI has been working with the fishermen to get a better understanding of the number and locations of FADs in Kupang and Lombok area.

MDPI is continuting the data collection on bycatch and ETP species.

Increase to PI 2.3.2 reported; three-year audit conducted. The FIP has implemented various monitoring and sampling measures for ETP species management and recorded interaction rates have been low.

The FIP has updated its Code of Conduct which now includes a "Fins Naturally Attached" policy prohibiting shark finning. 

Increase to PI scores 2.2.3, 2.3.3, 3.2.3; three-year audit has been made available. Improved data gathering processes have been employed through on-board camera data and port sampling as well as the implementation of monitoring, control and surveillance systems.  

Increase in PI 2.4.3; Three-year audit has been made available. The number and location of FADs associated with each UoA has been mapped in relation to bathymetric zones. Areas of protected habitat are known.

Increase to PI 2.5.3; three-year audit has been made available. The main impacts of the UoAs on key ecosystem elements have been investigated and made available.

The committee committed to supporting the development and launch of a vessel licensing platform (SAMSAT) approved under NTB's Governor decree No 24 / 2020.

Time-lapse camera deployments that include new technology such as fly-wire to assess whether or not ETP interactions were evident was deployed in Kupang and Lombok. Port-side enumerator deployments in Lombok and Kupang to assess the fishery impacts to by-catch, collecting data such as species composition, length and weight.
